WACP Accreditation Team Impreses Khalifa Isyaka Rabi’u Paediatric Hospital Kano

The West African College of Physicians (WACP) has conducted an accreditation visit to Khalifa Isyaka Rabiu Paediatric Hospital, Kano, as part of the process towards its accreditation as a Residency Training Centre in Paediatrics.

The accreditation team, led by Dr. Ben Onankpa of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), Sokoto, was received by the Permanent Secretary, Kano State Ministry of Health, Pharmacist Aminu Bashir, who represented the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf the Executive Secretary, Kano State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda; the Chief Medical Director, Khalifa Isyaka Rabiu Paediatric Hospital, Dr. Safia Gambo; senior directors from the Ministry and HMB; and veteran paediatricians, including Dr. Kabir Maso Kano and Dr Haruna Baba Jibril.

Speaking during the visit, Pharmacist Aminu Bashir warmly welcomed the team and expressed the State Government’s appreciation for the College’s commitment to strengthening specialist medical training. He described the exercise as a landmark moment for healthcare and medical education in Kano State, assuring the team of the Government’s continued commitment to supporting the hospital and addressing requirements necessary for sustainable postgraduate medical training.

The WACP team was highly impressed by the facilities and level of development witnessed, particularly at Khalifa Isyaka Rabiu Paediatric Hospital, Hasiya Bayero Paediatrics Hospital and the Sickle Cell Centre. The visit provided the team with an opportunity to assess the hospital’s infrastructure, services, human resources and preparedness for residency training.

If successfully concluded, the accreditation will position Khalifa Isyaka Rabiu Paediatric Hospital to become the first dedicated children’s hospital in Nigeria to attain accreditation as a Residency Training Centre in Paediatrics, representing a major milestone for Kano State and Nigerian paediatric healthcare.

The Executive Secretary Kano State Hospitals Management Board Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, expressed profound appreciation to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, whose administration has continued to invest in healthcare infrastructure, specialist services and human capital development.

In a statement signed by public Relations Officer state Hospitals Management Board Samira Sulaiman said Dr Nagoda described the development as more than an accreditation exercise it is an investment in the future of healthcare and a potential historic legacy of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration. The establishment of a specialist paediatric residency training centre will create opportunities for young doctors to receive advanced training in Kano while strengthening the State’s pool of specialist paediatricians.

The accreditation visit marks another significant step in Kano State’s drive to build a stronger, more specialised and sustainable healthcare system, with Khalifa Isyaka Rabiu Paediatric Hospital poised to play a major role in the future of paediatric healthcare and specialist medical education.
