Northern Senators demand immediate release of abducted Borgu residents
Senators from the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, under the aegis of the Northern Senators Forum, NSF, have called on the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, DSS, and other security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the immediate and safe release of persons abducted in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The senators also called for a comprehensive review of the security architecture in Niger State and the North-Central region to prevent a recurrence of such attacks.
The NSF condemned the attack on Kpenya Mosque and the villages of Gidan-Zana and Kpenya in Dekara District, Borgu LGA, which reportedly led to the abduction of worshippers and residents on August 22, 2026.
In a statement on Wednesday, Chairman of the Forum, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, APC, Katsina Central, urged the Federal Government to provide urgent relief, medical support and additional security reinforcement to affected communities in Borgu and other border areas.
Yar’Adua said the Forum was deeply concerned by the attack and extended its condolences to the government and people of Niger State, particularly families of those abducted and those reportedly killed.
He prayed for the repose of the deceased and strength for their families.
“Targeting innocent worshippers in a mosque and defenceless rural communities is not only cowardly but an attack on our shared humanity and faith,” he said.
Yar’Adua said reports of landmines allegedly being planted and further abductions to serve as bargaining chips were particularly troubling.
“We therefore call on the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services and all relevant security agencies to intensify ongoing rescue operations and ensure the immediate and safe release of all those abducted,” he said.
The NSF chairman also urged the Federal Government to provide urgent assistance to affected communities while strengthening security around vulnerable communities and border areas.
He stressed the need for a comprehensive review of the security architecture in Niger State and the wider North-Central region to address emerging threats and prevent further attacks.
“The Northern Senators Forum stands in full solidarity with the people of Niger State. We reaffirm our commitment to work with the Presidency and state governments to restore peace, protect lives, and uphold the dignity of our people across Northern Nigeria and the country at large,” Yar’Adua said.

THE REWARD FOR HARD WORK IS MORE WORK: A REJOINDER TO DR GARBA UBALE DANBATTA
THE REWARD FOR HARD WORK IS MORE WORK: A REJOINDER TO DR GARBA UBALE DANBATTA
By Nworisa Michael
The redeployment of Hon. Comr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya PhD from the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs to the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has attracted several reactions. While professional and civic organisations have congratulated him and acknowledged his contributions, Dr Garba Ubale Danbatta, a supposedly veteran journalist, has chosen to use the development to question his performance and professional conduct in his former ministry.
Dr Danbatta is entitled to his opinion. Nobody should be above criticism, especially in public office. However, when criticism is presented as a professional assessment, it should be supported by facts, not merely personal convictions or years of experience.
Before concluding that journalism suffered under Waiya, perhaps we should examine some of the developments recorded during his tenure.
Eight contributions worth considering:
• Grassroots information: Strengthened engagement with Information Officers across Kano’s 44 local government areas and eight zonal offices.
• Capacity building: Supported training programmes for local government Information Officers, alongside interactive engagements with editors and news managers.
• Media policy: Facilitated the inauguration of an 18-member committee to develop a media and information policy framework for Kano State.
• Digital transformation: Established a Digital Multimedia Department to modernise government communication, improve digital engagement and address misinformation.
• Peacebuilding: Advanced the Safe Corridor Project, an initiative focused on rehabilitation, skills development and reintegration of reformed youths.
• Media engagement: Engaged media practitioners, online publishers and political programme presenters on responsible public communication and professional conduct.
• Institutional development: Pursued interventions aimed at strengthening state-owned media institutions and improving the capacity of personnel within the information machinery.
• National recognition: Received the Crisis Communicator of the Year award at the 2026 National Spokespersons Awards in Abuja.
These developments do not mean that Waiya’s tenure was without shortcomings. They simply demonstrate that there is more to his record than the sweeping conclusion offered by his critic.
There is also something interesting about the public reactions to his redeployment. The Kano State Forum of Information Officers, Northern Youths Assembly and International Peace and Secure Society are among the organisations that have publicly acknowledged his contributions and congratulated him on his new assignment. Their statements may not settle every debate about his tenure, but they show that his work was not viewed negatively by everyone who interacted with his ministry.
Now, to Dr Danbatta’s presentation of his professional experience.
I found it rather curious that a commentary intended to assess another public officer’s performance devoted three of its concluding paragraphs to the author’s own professional journey, positions held and years of experience. One could almost finish reading the piece knowing more about the author’s resume than the evidence behind his criticism of Waiya.
Same individual who has been unable to ensure good working relationship with his staffs at Pyramid Radio Kano where is currently serves as its manager, a station that constantly runs out of diesel and goes off the air, perhaps even he isn’t proud of this hence he left it out from the list of his workplaces listed.
With due respect, professional experience is valuable, but it should strengthen an argument, not become the argument itself. A good product sells itself. A journalist’s professional standing should be reflected in the quality, fairness and depth of their analysis. Thirty years in the profession deserves recognition, but it does not automatically make every opinion conclusive.
If the intention was to assess Waiya’s stewardship, then the more important questions should have been: What did he inherit? What did he change? Which initiatives did he introduce? What measurable outcomes were achieved? And where did he fall short? Those are the questions that give criticism substance.
We can be safe to say that Waiya’s redeployment was a direct reward for his performance in the former ministry. The Governor has publicly explained the cabinet adjustments as part of efforts to strengthen institutions and improve service delivery. What is evident, however, is that Waiya has been entrusted with another important responsibility, and his record in the former ministry remains open to public examination.
The Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs is not beyond criticism, and neither is Dr. Waiya. But fairness requires that we acknowledge the work done alongside the shortcomings alleged.
Frankly the most fitting way to understand this new assignment is captured in the title of this piece: the reward for hard work is more work. His previous assignment is now part of his public record; his new ministry presents another opportunity to serve.
Congratulations, Hon. Comr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya. The expectations continue.

2027: Gov. Abba Appointees For Tinubu’s Campaign Council In Kano Is A Pathway To Victory
2027: Gov. Abba Appointees For Tinubu’s Campaign Council In Kano Is A Pathway To Victory
By Hon. Garba Yusuf Abubakar
The structure established by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, as Chairman of the Kano State APC Campaign Advisory Council, a significant step in preparing the party for the 2027 general elections. What particularly stands out for me is the calibre of individuals the Governor has brought together, including experienced politicians, former public office holders, elected representatives and grassroots political leaders. This reflects an approach that recognises the importance of experience, political influence and effective organisation in building a campaign structure capable of mobilising support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other APC candidates across Kano State.
The appointment of His Excellency, Abdullahi Tijjani Muhammad Gwarzo, as Director-General of the Presidential and Gubernatorial Campaign Management Team, alongside Hon. Bala Muhammad Gwagwarwa as First Deputy Director-General, Dr. Yunusa Adamu Dangwani, Dr. Ali Haruna Abubakar Makoda, Senator Abdussalam Abdulkarim Zaura and Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, among other distinguished personalities, demonstrates the breadth of experience assembled to coordinate the campaign. I am particularly encouraged by the combination of political experience, geographical representation and clearly assigned responsibilities within the management structure. As the Chief Campaign Spokesperson, I recognise the importance of effective communication in connecting the campaign’s activities, programmes and messages with the people.
The 155-member Campaign Advisory Council, which includes former Governors Ibrahim Shekarau and Abdullahi Ganduje, Deputy President of the Senate Barau Jibrin, Senators Kawu Sumaila and Rufa’i Hanga, alongside other influential political stakeholders, brings together a wide range of political experience and grassroots connections. In my view, the presence of these personalities provides an important platform for consultation, coordination, political engagement and mobilisation across Kano’s 44 local government areas. It also creates an opportunity to strengthen party unity and ensure that the presidential, gubernatorial and other APC campaigns operate within a coordinated framework.
I believe Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has established a structure that places considerable political experience and organisational responsibility under one umbrella. However, the success of this arrangement will depend on the commitment of every member to their respective assignments. As the Chief Campaign Spokesperson, I consider it my responsibility to communicate the campaign’s activities effectively, project its messages accurately and maintain constructive engagement with the media and the public. Ultimately, our collective responsibility is to translate the structure into practical political engagement, effective mobilisation and electoral support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and all APC candidates in 2027. The foundation has been laid, and the task ahead requires unity, discipline and collective commitment.
Garba Yusuf Abubakar is the Chief Campaign Spokesperson for the Presidential/Gubernatorial Campaign Team in Kano State.
