Kano Govt To Construct 5-Kilometre Rural Model Cities In 36 LGAs
Kano State Government says it is set to commence the construction of five-kilometre rural model cities across the 36 Local Government Areas of the state, as part of efforts to promote sustainable rural development and address the housing needs of the people.
Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Dr. Abdulkadir Abdussalam, disclosed this at a critical stakeholders’ strategy meeting held in Kano ahead of the flag-off of the project.
The meeting brought together traditional rulers, district heads, local government chairmen, DPMs, representatives of relevant ministries, permanent secretaries, managing directors and other critical stakeholders.
Dr. Abdulkadir said the initiative followed extensive consultations with communities across the state, which informed the development of a sustainable rural development plan covering the period from 2026 to 2030.
He said the rural model city project is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s blueprint for ensuring sustainable development in rural communities and providing affordable housing and plots to the people.
The Commissioner explained that the government is also committed to ensuring inclusivity, particularly in dealing with communities whose lands may be affected by the project.
He said under the proposed land-for-land compensation arrangement, affected landowners would be provided with land within the new model cities, replacement farmland and financial compensation.
Dr. Abdulkadir stressed the need for the cooperation of traditional rulers, local government authorities and other stakeholders to ensure smooth and sustainable implementation of the project.
On the housing component, the Commissioner for Housing, Architect Ibrahim Yakubu, said the first phase of the rural model cities would include road networks, drainage systems and solar street lighting, to be handled by the Ministry of Rural and Community Development.
Architect Ibrahim explained that the Ministry of Housing would oversee the construction of residential houses and other public facilities, including schools, perimeter fencing, gates and gate houses, market spaces, outdoor sporting facilities, mosques, Islamiyya and primary schools.
He said the project forms part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s broader housing programme aimed at addressing the housing deficit and expanding development beyond the state capital.
The Commissioner added that other mass housing projects are also underway, including the Gida-Gida Mega City at Gwangwan, 1,500 housing units at Zaria, as well as a new housing programme on more than 100 hectares of land at Lambu and Janguza, donated by the Governor for the construction of over 1,500 houses.
Architect Ibrahim Yakubu said the rural model cities project alone would provide more than 1,800 housing units across the 36 rural local government areas when completed.
He said the projects would contribute to reducing the housing deficit and expanding the urban corridor of Kano State.

Kebbi Govt Dismisses ADC’s Allegations Over Land Demolition
Kebbi State Government has dismissed allegations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) linking it to the demolition of a property around Azbir Hotel, along in Birnin Kebbi, describing the claims as false, misleading and politically motivated.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed-BK, stated this during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi, thr state capital attended by media aides to the Kebbi State Governor.
Ahamed BK accused the opposition party, ADC of repeatedly resorting to unsubstantiated allegations, deliberate misinformation and distortion of facts in what he described as an attempt to discredit the Kebbi State Government and generate unnecessary public controversy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He explained that the incident was essentially a private land ownership dispute which had been mischievously presented by some ADC supporters on social media as an action carried out by the state government against an opposition-owned property.
According to him the subsequent developments and documentary evidence presented by Alhaji Umaru Mohammed Gulumbe, a businessman claiming ownership of the disputed property, established that the matter was a civil dispute between private individuals as the documents presented, according to the Commissioner, was a Certificate of Occupancy bearing the signature of former Governor Adamu Aliero.
The Commissioner further explained that Gulumbe had formally reported the alleged trespass to the Police and petitioned the Ministry of Lands and Housing as committees were constituted to investigate the matter examined the competing claims and confirmed ownership of the disputed plot in favour of Gulumbe.
Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed-BK categorically maintained that the Kebbi State Government neither initiated nor participated in the demolition, stressing that the government had no involvement in the private dispute. He described attempts to associate the administration of Governor Idris, with the incident as a calculated effort to mislead the public and tarnish the government’s image.
He expressed concern that despite the emergence of information clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident, the ADC had not publicly retracted its allegations or offered an apology to the state government.
He maintained that political differences should never become an excuse for manufacturing allegations or misleading the public on matters that can be established through lawful procedures.
